Hi [fname] and welcome to the January 2010 In-Touch newsletter.
Microsoft Access 2007 Tip
Macros now provide support for simple variables,
error handling and some limited looping.
Embed a macro within the event property of a
control like a button to open a form or report, all without the need for VBA
code.
This is significant, as Access macros still work
even when VBA code is disabled for security.
Identity Theft
A Veda Advantage Identity Crimes Report by
Galaxy Research found that more than 1.5 million Australians had credit cards
illegally copied and 1.2 million had bank accounts illegally accessed. Mail
theft is one of the easiest ways to get details of someone's identity and the
report found 7% of respondents had personal mail stolen.

DNA anyone?
Some time was spent in Hobart working with the
Tasmania Police. The system was a quality control database for
forensic evidence. It uses an Access front end and an SQL back end. Most of the
work involved changes to facilitate inter departmental communication, a barcode
reader interface and
improvements to business processes to aid workflow. Is working smarter, not
harder, something you could do with in your day?
How can I minimise system downtime?
This was the question posed by a professional practice
in Launceston. They had data on one machine (PC1) with other client PCs on a
local area network with UPS support. If the PC1 disk was to fail the
practice would stop until a new disk was installed and the
machine rebuilt. To lower the risk of disk failure we installed a
file server with a RAID 1 array. This provided
greater protection of the data with hot swappable disks that would rebuild
should a disk fail. Are your systems critical to your business continuity?
National Broadband Network (NBN) and business
opportunities.
2010 and beyond. GARJEWA has just installed
a DELL PowerEdgeWindows 2008 R2 server as a test
bed for our Software as a Service (SAS) development. We are looking forward to a lot of Microsoft Silverlight
development over the next 12 months and our goal is to provide a platform for a
"Green" alternative for training delivery and assessment.
Best
regards, Jeff Garner.
